Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends
Housing
A.   Where I found it: The website for my apartment complex.
B.   Why an opportunity might exist: Since the prices for housing is rising at this specific apartment complex, it could encourage more opportunities to make money.
C.    Prototypical customer: People who live in apartment complexes looking to make more money to help pay.
D.   Exploit: The opportunity is relatively easy to exploit because there are many places looking to hire more people so finding a job should not be hard.
Medical Marijuana
A.   Where I found it: Through multiple news outlets and social media.
B.   Why an opportunity might exist: There is sufficient evidence that shows medical marijuana benefits those who have certain illnesses and pain.
C.    Prototypical customer: This could be an individual in need of medical marijuana to help relieve pain or help with their illness.
D.   Exploit: I think this is relatively easy to exploit because medical marijuana is legal in numerous states and the effect it has on those who need it is successful.
Economic trend: Climate Change
A.   Where I found it: Local news outlets
B.   Why an opportunity might exist: The US Climate is changing due to global warming, which is caused by an increase in greenhouse gases, this not only leads to warmers days but increases in the prices for food.
C.    Prototypical customer: Everyone is affected by climate change but more specifically those who are experiencing natural disasters.
D.   Exploit: I think this is relatively hard to exploit, the population does a lot to help the climate change but there is still more that could be done.
Economic trend: Baby Boomers are not retiring
A.   Where I found it: Through research
B.   Why an opportunity might exist: Older generations will not make room for younger generations to begin working and take over for them. The willingness of baby boomers to work stems from the Great Recession and the scars left from that.
C.    Prototypical customer: Someone from the baby boomer generation and from the younger generation.
D.   Exploit: I think this is relatively hard to exploit if all the jobs available are taken then new jobs will need to be created.

  1. Hello Jaylynn,
I agree that there is a huge opportunity in the marijuana industry as a whole with how the government is changing its stance towards it. Medical marijuana is becoming increasingly legal in many states and I do not think it will be long until recreational marijuana is legal everywhere as well. The recent news surrounding vaping is pushing towards more regulation in the marijuana/vaping sector of the smoking industry, as many of these vaping deaths are a result of the harmful chemicals placed within these marijuana vaporizers, that is possible because of the lack of proper regulation of these companies. The economic trend surrounding baby boomers is very interesting and I think this presents an opportunity for current students to focus more on studies and earning a higher level of education so that they will become more experienced when entering the work force. Nice post!

  2. Good afternoon Jaylynn,
The opportunities that you present are extremely relevant during this time. For example, many states are still debating over the legalization of marijuana as well as the importance of climate change. Additionally, I feel that the issue about baby boomers not retiring is a concerning topic for the functionality of countries or even society. These topics show that there are many opportunities available to identify.

  3. Hello Jaylynn,
I agree that with all of these sources there are opportunities that can be taken from them. I definitely think that baby boomers are making it harder and harder for other generations to find work because they are not retiring at the proper age. Younger generations are struggling to find jobs in their actual field rather than just a side job because there are barely any positions open. To be able to have a turnover, baby boomers must realize that they need to retire at the proper age to give positions to others.
